DON LUIGI TELLS HIMSELF
For the canonization of Don Luigi Guanella, the Centro Studi Guanelliani edited the new edition of Le vie della Provvidenza, accompanied by historical notes and a large photographic insert.
"The ways of Providence are the final balance of Don Guanella's entire activity, of his entire life at the service of the poor. And the balance appears positive: the line marked out by Providence accompanied him along the whole journey. He manages to explain and demonstrate how it was God's guidance that led him forward. At the end of his life it could be easy to select that vein followed for so many years and explain it to himself and to his faithful companions on the journey. But these 'memoirs' demonstrate a significant personal maturity: they do not there is emphasis, there is no dreaming or vainglory, there is not even a satisfaction that could be legitimate. There is, however, a certain serene and quiet security. It is the story of an old man reviewing his history before God, to himself and to his confreres, and he rereads it with the conviction of having served God and the poor where he was sent, with great maturity. What he thinks of his life, of the dark moments of his choices, of the difficult and hard moments of his origins , of the hopes that follow, of the tireless industriousness trusting in the continuous divine assistance: everything is reflected in it, clearly and with great balance. We are faced with a very broad and detailed story, a fresh and faithful memory".

Don Tito himself, in the presentation, gives the reason for this work of his: "To complete a wider knowledge of the personality of don Guanella it is necessary to deepen his activity as pastor of souls, his apostolic work, the activities and style of his priestly ministry".
The Provincial Superior sincerely thanks Don Tito for this new contribution to the knowledge of the pastoral ministry of the Founder. A copy was given to the local superiors for each confrere.

This is the biography of Don Guanella, Founder of the Servants of Charity and of the Daughters of Saint Mary of Divine Providence. He entrusted them with the care of the poor, especially the most abandoned, "those who are poor in intelligence or health or substance". They dedicate themselves in a special way to assisting the mentally disabled called by Don Luigi "good children", the elderly, children and young people. However, no charitable initiative left Don Guanella indifferent, who opened his houses to every category of people in difficulty: deaf-mute, old and sick priests, elderly people, even wealthy, but abandoned.
In the last years of Don Guanella's life, the congregations were also widespread in the United States.
The text is written in a very simple, devout way, in the hagiographic style somewhat of the past. An interesting aspect is the fact that everything is very often told in the words of Don Guanella himself (who, among other things, wrote an autobiography in the third person, thus providing many first-hand data!), and thus gives us the flavor of the time, the sense of apostolic concern and almost "unconscious" charity, in a trusting and absolute abandonment in Providence.
Paul VI declared him "blessed" in 1964.

Often overlooked the lives of the Saints tell concretely the secret to following Jesus.
After the success of "8 Saints in pole position" don Gimmi Rizzi relaunches and proposes "8 new Saints in pole position" going here to touch the "great" of the Church: John the Baptist, Don Bosco, Massimiliano Kolbe, Agostino, Francesco d' Assisi, Luigi Gonzaga, Antonio da Padova and Luigi Guanella.
Indulging his style don Gimmi Rizzi presents these "new" saints to the boys in a very simple way, drawing from their lives the right advice to grow.
The aid is very useful in catechesis and youth pastoral, for school camps, formative conversations and spiritual weekends.

"A holy man like don Guanella, a Work like yours are among the greatest manifestations of holiness of our time" is how Agostino Gemelli reminds him. Lived in an era marked by profound political, social, religious and cultural changes, Don Guanella (1842-1915) dedicated his entire existence to the service of the poorest in substance, health and talent. After his priestly ordination, in the maturation of his vocation, the years spent with Don Bosco in Turin will be fundamental. Education and instruction become the cornerstones of pastoral action, founded on a pedagogical project "of the possible and differentiated", that is, attentive to the needs and sensitivity of individuals, still extraordinarily relevant today. In retracing the stages of the biographical and foundational story, the profile of an authentic champion of charity emerges, whose spirit continues to animate and live in the houses of his Work, now widespread throughout the world.

Following the story of the priest from Como, we meet the most well-known characters of the time: from the popes to the cardinals of the diocese and curia, from bishops to Don Bosco, to Don Orione, to Father Gemelli, to the king, to the queen, to the ministers, to the prefects...
One has the impression of following the unfolding of a philanthropic adventure, and instead one realizes that at the root, explaining everything, lies an indomitable faith in Providence, in the Sacred Heart, in Our Lady of Mercy: a religious and therefore human justification , in a civil society that wants to cancel or disregard faith, remaining empty and soulless...

To avoid the weight of a chronological history, we have tried to offer as much sliding as possible in these pages; brushstrokes on the existence of Don Luigi Guanella. You will get to know Don Guanella described through episodes: you will see him in his splendid Alpine valley, in his poor but solid house, where the figures of his grandfather, mother and above all father stand out, and thirteen brothers, healthy, lively, happy with little.
Don Guanella has entrusted his Work and its beneficiaries in good hands; after spending his physical energies and his heartbeats to the extreme, tired of walking and toiling on the streets of the "Fourth World" where he had gathered and cared for the most beloved children of God, Luigi Guanella leaves this earth and runs towards God, enter the endless light.
But now that he's dead, he's more alive than ever. He is present in works that can be seen and touched, and that must continue; expanded and adapted to the times but always on the edge of the intuition and spirit of the Founder. That he was a brave man, a driver, a builder, a saint.
