The Pious Union of the Transit of St. Joseph was founded by St. D. Luigi Guanella (1842-1915) with the approval and help of the Supreme Pontiff St. Pius X for two main purposes:

1) to divulge, promote and spread throughout the world the cult of St. Joseph, universal Patron of the Church and in particular of a happy death;

2) to gather as many priests and faithful as possible in a universal Crusade of prayers and good works in favor of the dying of all places and at all times, thus disposing them too to a holy death.

The PRIMARY SEAT of the Pious Union is located in Rome at the Temple of St. Joseph, erected in memory of the double Jubilee - Priestly and Episcopal - of St. Pius X and functioned by Priests, Servants of Charity, by Don Guanella. The Pious Union has millions of members all over the world.

The prayer for the Dying, to be recited devoutly several times a day, is as follows «O St. Joseph, putative father of Jesus Christ and true Spouse of the Virgin Mary, pray for us and for the dying of this day (or of this Night).

Exhortation of St. Pius X of February 12, 1914, in the establishment of the Primary: €œ... Wishing to make known how much we appreciate this most praiseworthy Institution, we want Our Name to be written first among all the members of the same, urging all Our beloved Brothers in the Priesthood not to forget to remember the dying every day in the Divine Sacrifice†.
