Born in Lucca on January 28, 1860.
Died in Rome on June 19, 1931.
Having obtained his doctorate at the theological college of Florence, he was a teacher of ecclesiastical history in the decanal seminary of S. Michele in Foro. He was for a long time spiritual director of Saint Gemma Galgani and Blessed Elena Guerra. Elected titular bishop of Dionysiade and auxiliary of Lucca in 1897, he was transferred to Arezzo on 14 November 1904. Forced by Benedict XV to leave the diocese of Arezzo in 1919, he was promoted to the titular archbishopric of Antioch of Pisidia and appointed canon and vicar of the basilica of S. Maria Maggiore. Adorned with upright moral virtue and insomniac apostolic zeal (his cause for beatification was introduced but "silet"), he was also a convinced representative of anti-modernism and therefore a supporter of the intransigent press.
Having settled in Rome, Msgr. Volpi became «illustrious, benevolent and edifying parishioner» of *S. Joseph at the Triumphal. He also blessed the foundation stone of the * chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Providence in Valle d'Inferno on December 26, 1920.
