Born in Veiano (Viterbo) on December 27, 1836.

Died in Rome on April 17, 1911.

 

Ordained a priest in 1859, in 1884 he was nominated apostolic delegate in the republics of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia and consecrated titular bishop of Amida and then of Nazianzus. Canon of the Lateran basilica in 1889. Created cardinal by Leo XIII in the consistory of 22 June 1903. Pro-secretary of the Congregation of the Council from 1895, he was appointed prefect of the Congregation of Studies in 1910.

Don Guanella turned to him in 1905 as a member of the Congregation of the Council to examine the possibility of erecting the diocese of Sondrio.
