Born in Frosinone on November 7, 1845.

Died in Anzio (Rome) on 11 July 1927.

Canon of the patriarchal Liberian and Vatican basilicas, he was appointed chamber master by Leo XIII on 31 December 1891 and butler on 29 May 1901. Created cardinal deacon of Santi Cosma e Damiano by Pius X in the consistory of 11 December 1905, he was later appointed pro-prefect of the Congregation for Religious, due to the illness of card. Vives y Tutó, on June 12, 1913 and became prefect on October 31, 1913.

Don Guanella met Monsignor Cagiano de Azevedo in October 1902 when, being in Rome, he asked and obtained from the Butler the honor of secret waiter in favor of his benefactor Don Giovanni Battista Baroni. The following year she received confirmation of the same title from Pius X and suggested to Don Baroni: «It would be good if you also wrote to Msgr. De Azevedo who will soon be cardinal at the Maggiordomato in the Vatican». Having become a cardinal, Cagiano de Azevedo visited the * colony of Monte Mario on 3 March 1907, covering it entirely on foot, taking minute interest in the agricultural aspects and formulating the "strong desire" that a similar colony be established in his Frosinone. As prefect of the Congregation for Religious, Don Guanella turned to him on February 4, 1914, to obtain permission to take out a loan with the Bank of Italy for the construction of a room for the nuns and their works next to the church of San Giuseppe al Trionfale. Still in the same year, he advised Cardinal * Andrea Carlo Ferrari, archbishop of Milan, to wait before granting exemption from parochial rights in favor of the * Pia Casa dei Poveri. In 1915 he presided over the meeting of the Commission for the examination of new Institutes which on 14 January studied the problem of separating the male institution from the female one and enjoined the renunciation of assistance to the elderly to avoid occasions of "too frequent family contact" with the sisters.
